3 Tips for Storing Seasonal Holiday Décor in Self-Storage

Now that the snow has given way to the warmer weather of spring, many people are starting to get back into their yards and begin to prep for the sunnier days ahead. For some, this may include annual yard maintenance, while for others, it might mean packing away seasonal winter décor both inside and outdoors to make way for more seasonally appropriate decorations. Self-storage units are the perfect place to store your seasonal holiday décor when it isn’t in use, especially if you lack storage space in your home.

We’ve highlighted a few tips for storing your seasonal holiday décor to help keep your decorations in great condition until you need them next.

Utilize Totes and Boxes for Easy Stacking

It’s safe to say that not every piece of seasonal décor is going to be easy to pack away and store, which is why it can be beneficial to utilize totes and boxes to keep everything organized. They are also great for stacking, which can help keep items up and off the floor of your unit. It can be easy to lose items once they are tossed into a box, so don’t forget to organize as you pack items away. For things like seasonal string lights, try wrapping them around a piece of cardboard to prevent tangles, or utilize empty egg cartons for delicate Christmas tree decorations.

Declutter Every Year

One of the easiest ways to make storing seasonal décor a breeze is to declutter each year. Consider going through your items as you pack them away and see if there is anything you want to part with. Items that don’t work anymore or are broken can be thrown out, while items you’ve grown tired of can be donated. This will not only help to remind you of exactly what you have but can also prevent you from placing things in storage that you might not need to.

Don’t Forget to Label

As you’re packing your items into their designated boxes or totes, don’t forget to label them as you go. This will not only allow you to easily find what you need when you come to retrieve your decorations again in the fall, but it will help you keep your entire storage unit organized. Use masking tape and a permanent marker to help identify what items are in each box, and make sure to stack and store them with the label facing out so you can easily read it later.

If you’re looking to start packing away your seasonal décor but lack storage space in your home, then one of our self-storage units might be perfect for you!
